cracked graphite shaft

Due to absolute impatience and stupidity I cracked the shaft of my GAB II driver while trying to regrip it. I've installed grips on this club a couple
times already, but have not had a problem. I just couldn't get the damn grip on and because it was the last club in my set and I was tired, I did the unthinkable and tightened down the vise just too much in order to hold the
shaft securely. Instant horrible feeling as the crack appeared. I've been using a cheap rubber vice clamp that I bought from Golf Supply America. Does
a more expensive device such as the steel and rubber Golf Pride clamp protector work better than the cheap one or would I have done the same stupid thing just as easily with that? I'm not a club maker (needless to say), but have installed grips on my clubs many times in the past and thought it was a great way to save money. Obviously, I've lost most gains in that area now that I'm on my way to someone who can reshaft my club. Dumb, dumb, dumb.
